The Honda S2000 was released in 1999 to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary and has evolved from four decades of motorsport expertise. The S2000 is built at the same plant as the Honda NSX in Tochigi - Japan and is subject to the same meticulous build process. Virtually every component is unique to the S2000 and designed for outstanding performance.

The 2004 model received significant upgrades including numerous chassis changes and the steering, throttle, clutch, gearshift and brake systems have been overhauled for an even more enjoyable driving experience.

fisker karma electric car with amazing design

January 2010- I turned 33, and my wife is now expecting a baby- so naturally we drove straight to our nearest lifestyle/crossover/soft-roader dealer and purchased a brand new Nissan Qashqai. Now this may sound like a total cliche- partly because it is- but it is also in my opinion the perfect car choice for our lives. I was personally quite surprised at some friends reactions (a Qashqai is NOT a gas guzzling behemoth!), but mostly reactions were positive. If activity at the dealers is any indication, a Qashqai is the ONLY car to be seen buying right now. Our dealer carries Seat, Audi, Volkswagen, Peugeot, and Nissan- the showroom housing everything except VW/Audi who seem to need their own space (to lord it up). I can assure you there were only 2 cars that any customers were looking at in the showroom- Qashqai, and the occasional glance at the new Peugeot MASSIVE LONG UGLY BUS/PEOPLE CARRIER thingy. I live in Finland, and Finns love a spacious car- they love a CHEAP spacious car even more, hence the Peugeot being looked at. The Qashqai however is something of a sales legend across Europe. When compared directly with my father-in-laws Honda CR-V it makes so much sense. The CR-V is about the same size, is very similar to drive, but costs €10,000 more than my Qashqai!! Northern Finland is also covered in deep snow for a good 6months of the year, so anything with higher ground clearance or 4WD hardware is snapped up here. Even more appealing to me, was the fact I could save money and improve fuel economy by ordering my Qashqai as 2WD. It is law here in Finland to run winter tyres, and where I live we all use metal studded tyres- which means that 2WD is adequate (but obviously not as ideal as 4WD) in even the worst conditions. The equipment spec on our car is amazing- with touch-screen sat-nav, full length glass sunroof, dual zone climate control (how on earth can air a few cms from other air- be a different temperature?!), cruise control, bluetooth and ipod connectivity, rear view camera and for the summer- 18″ alloy wheels! The boot is huge, and the rear seats have great legroom.

If we had to specify a perfect car for us and future baby +gear, it needs to have lots of space, do 38mpg, have sat-nav and ipod connections, good ground clearance, isofix seat stuff (not sure what all that is yet, but I’ll let you know later on this year), 5star NCAP ratings, be nice to drive (nice enough, nothing fancy!) and cost as little as possible while also looking awesome. We considered a shortlist of Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Yeti, Citroen C3 Picasso and maybe a second hand Mercedes B-Class. After seeing the Qashqai we never made it to test drive any of the other options! But we ruled them out for a few reasons- Merc would have to be 2nd hand, and also didn’t have the ground clearance, the Yeti had fake wood on the dash in the brochure- so that’s also a non-starter, and the best alternative would be the lovely C3 Picasso and it’s actually a shame we didn’t try one out. It did seem a little small on paper, but then it is a lot cheaper than a Qashqai. So we went to look at a Qashqai together, and frankly fell in love after one test drive! We didn’t hesitate, and on the spot bought a Qashqai 1.6 Acenta-RC 2WD in white, with 18″ wheels, and we’re really pleased with it. It’s 38mpg or 7.3L/100km on long journeys is a long way from the planet harming image of other SUVs!

Right, lets talk design- and first of all we come to the fact that nearly all the cars I considered purchasing were designed by friends of mine! Mile Nurnberger’s C3 is a delightful urban transport product- fit for the 21st century, but as I said perhaps not quite rugged or large enough for the outback of Finland. We were impressed with the perfect reliability of our C3 over the last 2 years however. Next the Merc B-Class has been a real grower, from when I first saw the design back in 2004 I believe, it actually seems to have improved- perhaps fitting in more as other cars ape it’s style. Mark Fetherstone created an impressive amount of visual drama and speed of lines in a very compact package that must have been difficult to stick to. The car is very spacious inside, and very square in plan shape, but thanks to some serious sculpting of the bonnet and nose it maintains the Mercedes DNA. A very slick job indeed, and clearly the reason Mark’s next assignment was to design the flagship SLS supercar.

2004 Nissan Qashqai Geneva Concept

Moving on to the Nissan Qashqai- this car also has a very close link to my studies at Coventry University, being design by one of my peers a few years ahead of me- Matthew Weaver. Matt actually designed the original concept car, for the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, while working at the brand new Nissan Europe Design studio at the Rotunda, London. The Qashqai concept was an amazing success for that studio first public design, and proved absolutely it’s worth. The crossover vehicle was radical, combining 4×4 ruggedness, with sporty hints on the upper surfaces while aiming for normal passenger car levels of space and refinement. The design was aimed squarely at urban dwellers, succesful young city workers that also would like to travel out of town for adventure. This brilliant mix of urban and lifestlye reminds of the original Range Rover, but the Qashqai proposed this in a much less tough utlitarian way. Bulging wheel arches, and even Mercedes SLK inspired bonnet bulges were shameless hints to sportscars and seemingly at odds with what was underneath. The public got it though, they had no cares at all about what was underneath the exterior. The bonnet bulges are a great example of this- inspired as they are by the SLK, and before that pre-war Mercedes F1 cars, where those bulges cover longitudinally mounted straight engines. The Qashqai of course has a transverse engine layout, but those kind of style over substance details are what the urban hipster is all about! The concept shows the key elements that made it right throught to production- the bonnet bulges, the curved and muscular wheel arches, the side DLO graphic and also the general sweep of the very low and sporty glasshouse. This was radical in 2004 remember, and compare with its competitors such as the Honda CR-V, a very boxy design which has since taken inspiration from the Qashqai. The concept did exhibit some of the early 2000′s obsession with clean but ultimately a little lifeless Audi inspired surfaces, which happily were actually improved on for the production car. Matt’s original superb sketches had a lot more sportiness and dynamic life about them- which again can be seen more in the final production car thankfully.

So moving on to the actual production car- one of which I now own, we can see that the design has changed in detail, but the overall character of the idea is brilliantly maintained and in fact improved upon. The really brave, but very clever step Nissan took, was to make this car cheap and to make it replace an entirely normal Golf segment vehicle- the Almera. The Almera, and Sunny/Pulsar before it failed to beat the Golf or Focus, or even Astra in terms of sale so Nissan decided to so something smart. They built the Qashqai on basic mechanicals from the Almera, charged only a little more money than the Almera- but then at this price point there were no other off-road style vehicles at all. They correctly predicted that urban consumers couldn’t care less about the smelly oily bits underneath, they didn’t even need the extra complexity of 4WD (almost pointless on-road anyway). The production version kept the initial idea talked about by Matt Weaver- of dual personalities, with the lower body showing black plastic, off-roader inspired functional design leading to curves, bulges, and even that most sportscar like feature of all- the sweeping, tensioned boneline from front wheelarch right along to rear lights. The bonnet and headlights were criticised for being very similar design to the Mercedes SLK- which is an amazing fact when we consider how utterly different those two cars are in genre. An SUV with a sportcars body? Yes, Nissan did a crazy thing, and 6 years later we’re all finally getting what the hell they were on about.

Incidentally, this Nissan was intended to sell huge numbers globally- obviously the only way we could actually be offered the prices we are! In the US the Qashqai is sold as the Nissan Rogue, and in Japan as the Nissan Dualis. The Dualis is identical to the Qashqai, but the Rogue is styled differently and is also larger (well, it is aimed at America- what did you expect?). The design of the rogue shows us interesting aspects to American tastes, as it essentially loses all of the utilitarian and rugged features- such as black plastic lower panels. The inability for any American to buy any car with black plastic on it is perhaps due to the “cheapness” factor associated with it. They sure love shiny things, and the Rogue shows us just how shiny! An advantage of re-engineering the US version to be much larger, and also to offer 4WD versions is that Nissan has now used the larger base platform to launch own very own European larger Qashqai- called the Qashqai +2. The 4WD underpinnigs have also made themselves available over here on any Qashqai, for people who just feel they can’t fake it with the 2WD version. Frankly the Rogue is horrible to my euro tastes, all plasticky and shiny and tacky- but considering it is larger, with much larger V6 engines it is of course ironically much cheaper than our tiny Qashqai! $20,000 is really not much cash for such a good car. The Qashqai is and was a gamechanger (to paraphrase Steve Jobs?) for the car industry. It solved a difficult problem Nissan was having in the volume market, by coming at that problem from a new angle. It continued the drive of 4×4 inspired vehicles downwards in size and price to levels that everyone could afford, but it also did this without using heavy, expensive and inefficient 4WD hardware. It created the eco-concious SUV buyer, it also took on the very succesful Honda CR-V in America and pushed that market to a sportier look which even the next CR-V bowed down to.

Fisker KarmaFisker Karma is slated to roll of the assembly lines in Finland end of the year with sales starting soon after. So far Fisker Automotive has received 1,300 orders for this luxury plug-in hybrid.

On Sunday Fisker aired a first 60-second commercial during the Academy Awards gala on Los Angeles television station KTLA.

Fisker Automotive took the wraps of the Karma S Concept today at the Detroit Auto Show. The four-seat, plug-in hybrid hardtop convertible is powered by two electric motors that generate a total of 403 hp.

Featuring the proprietary Q-Drive powertrain, the Fisker Karma S Concept will have an all-electric range of 50 miles (80km). After 50 miles, the gasoline engine turns a generator to charge the lithium ion battery.


Fisker Automotive today announced that its first production car, the Fisker Karma, will be showcased at the 2009 North American International Auto Show.

With only minor design enhancements made to the exterior of the vehicle, the production Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid retains the extreme proportions and beautiful sculpture of the January 2008 Karma show car.

With a base price of $87,900 (USD), the Fisker Karma is scheduled to begin delivery in November 2009.

Fisker Automotive isn’t wasting any time getting its Karma plug-in hybrid on the road. Five months after pulling the wraps off the car at the Detroit auto show, it’s flogging a test mule in Southern California.

In many cases, the production version of a concept loses the finesse which created the buzz in the first place, but this prototype appears to have kept an almost identical design with the black and white disguising doing little to hide any design elements from public view.


Yesterday Tesla Motors announced limited edition for Europe. Now Fisker has confirmed Karma for Europe.

The Fisker Karma is a four seater plug-in hybrid premium sports sedan and stunned many Americans at the 2008 NAIAS as well as Europeans at Geneva.

There are no official performance specifications green sports sedan available yet, but Fisker Automotive have claimed a sub 6 second 0-100 km/h time, 200 km/h top speed and max torque available from stand still.

The problem with all-electric vehicles and hybrids is that they are very quiet. At least it seems to be the problem for Fisker. Driving a sports car without any sound would definetely seem weird.
Imagine taking your 911 GT3 to the track and driving around with no sound. With some cars the sound is part of driving.

Fisker Distinguishes His Company From Tesla, Chevy

In the world of electric performance cars, there are two names to know: Fisker and Tesla. The man behind the upcoming $87,900 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sports sedan wants you to know the difference. Seasoned auto designer and CEO of Fisker Coachbuild, Henrik Fisker has an enviable résumé for any car enthusiast. He designed the Aston Martin DB9, V8 Vantage and the BMW Z8 to name a few.

Now he's set his sights on making an environmentally friendly sports car, but it's not only the look of his new creation that he believes will set it apart from the competition. “The full-electric car [a la Tesla] is a niche market. Plug-in hybrids have a much bigger market,” said Fisker at a meeting of the Western Automotive Journalists association. The potential growth of the plug-in hybrid market is what Fisker believes has helped him raise the venture capital for his upcoming vehicles.

I believe no one with a green interest have missed out that the poster boy of Plug-In Hybrids Fisker Karma has , just 19 months after being presented as a concept, now been tested on a racetrack in California.

Is it any good then? Well it seems like the Fisker People has been doing just the opposite of Toyota people with long term research and technology maturity and taken what is available today with a hell of a lot of Cell-phone batteries, a petrol driven electricity backup generator, 2 high torque 201 hp Electrical engines at the front wheels and a well paid car designer.
Add to that the most brilliant marketing team making people like me having to write about it for free…

Result: Unless the people at Fisker are superheroes there must be a lot that is far from ready in this car but it is there on the racetrack, it makes > 100 mph and it looks like the pieces are sticking together

6. Fisker Karma
Now you’re talking. Check out this Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sports car, a comely road rocket whose designer Henrik Fisker hails from BMW and Aston Martin. The $80K car supposedly will go 125 mph, but beyond that number and lots of sexy pictures, the company is mum about the progress with its power plant it says is made by Quantum Technologies. Too bad the company is now being sued by Tesla Motors for swiping trade secrets. Fisker says he’ll be showing off a test vehicle before this summer, and hopes to produce the first cars sometime in 2009. So far, it’s a lot of talk.

7. Renault-Nissan
Here’s a novel idea: Give away electric cars, and then sell battery maintenance in a contract-based business model. Called Project Better Place, it’s a plan scheduled to start this year that involves a huge grid of parking meter-like charging units, along with refueling stations where the entire battery can be quickly swapped out for a fresh one. The cars, jointly developed by Renault-Nissan, will have a 100+ mile range, a 100 mph top speed and will go 0 to 60 in under 10 seconds.

8. Zenn
This Toronto-based carmaker started out slowly, selling 250 low-speed electric “neighborhood electric vehicles” in 2007. Now Zenn plans to roll out a much faster car, powered by an energy-storing “ultracapacitor” made by EEStor by fall of 2009. This all-electric car is said to have zero emissions and no noise, something that might strike fear in the hearts of blind people everywhere. That mysterious ultracapacitor solid-state electrical energy storage unit is called by its maker: “longer lasting, lighter, more powerful, and environmentally friendly” than batteries used in other vehicles.

9. Venturi Eclectic Car
You have to laugh when you first lay eyes on this car, with its optimistically-placed wind turbine hoping to catch a breeze that might add to its 30-mile range at 30 mph. There’s also a solar panel up top, making the plug-in car “energy-autonomous.” Pretty much a glorified golf cart, its makers say they plan to build 200 of the $31,000 cars in an initial limited run, with production models hitting the road next year. The only problem would be finding people to drive the car that don’t mind appearing to be a bit eclectic themselves.

10. Th!nk Ox
Here’s the first five-seat electric car, the Th!nk Ox, which is a follow-on to this Norway-based (formerly part of Ford) company’s first car, the Th!nk City. Said to have similar technology, the Th!nk City can travel at 62 mph, goes more than 100 miles on a charge, and there are 1,200 of them on the road now. The company didn’t mention a price or delivery date on the Th!nk Ox, but a notable development in the company’s fortunes was GE’s investment in lithium-ion battery manufacturer A123Systems, which will supply the batteries for the cars.

FISKER AUTOMOTIVE UNVEILS FISKER KARMA, FIRST EVER LUXURY PLUG-IN HYBRID

DETROIT, Jan. 14 -- Fisker Automotive, Inc., a green American premium sports car company, today unveiled its first production car, the Fisker Karma, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The first of its kind four-door plug-in hybrid premium sports sedan will have a starting price of $80,000. Initial deliveries of the Karma will commence in the 4th quarter of 2009 with annual production projected to reach 15,000 cars. The first 99 cars off the assembly line will be individually numbered and signed by Henrik Fisker and will be produced in the color and trim of the show car seen at NAIAS.

In Buddhism/Hinduism, Karma is defined as the force generated by a person's good or evil actions which determines the nature of the person's next existence. TheFisker Karma allows consumers to practice good Karma -- driving a car that is environmentally friendly -- without sacrificing the extreme comfort and style of the luxury automobile category.

"In creating Fisker Automotive, Inc. we sought to develop a range of beautiful, environmentally friendly cars that make environmental sense without compromise," said Fisker Automotive, Inc. CEO Henrik Fisker. "Our hope is that theFisker Karma will be the start of a new trend in the automotive business -- less concession with more efficiency."

The car features cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology, penned as Q DRIVE, developed by Quantum Technologies exclusively for Fisker Automotive. The Karma's Q DRIVE configuration consists of a small gasoline engine that turns the generator, which charges the lithium ion battery pack, powering the electric motor and turning the rear wheels. This proprietary design allows consumers to drive the car emission free for up to 50 miles a day provided the car is charged every evening. It's conceivable that if consumers follow this daily routine, they will only need to fuel the car but once a year. This Q DRIVE technology will provide a base for all future derivatives from Fisker Automotive.

"Our goal here is to deliver the advancement that Quantum Technologies has made in the area of plug-in hybrid technology. By combining our efforts with the renowned design talent of Henrik Fisker, we can produce cars that make a difference to the environment -- without sacrificing the luxury that accompanies the finest automobiles," stated Alan Niedzwiecki, CEO Quantum Technologies.

The sleek design of the Fisker Karma, which accentuates the long hood, is a direct result of the breakthrough all-new from the ground up chassis design with powertrain development. This unique design places the battery pack at the center of the vehicle between the two axles, providing optimal vehicle driving dynamics, maximum safety, and proportionate design. Both the interior and exterior of the car will be put to market as seen at the NAIAS.

Fisker Karma Exterior The all new from the ground up exterior design features a continual flow of sculpture and dramatic proportion. Similar in height to the Porsche 911, the length of the Mercedes Benz CLS, and the width of a BMW 7-series, the Fisker Karma's structure and body panels will make extensive use of aluminum to keep the overall vehicle weight as low as possible. Additionally, a new drive train configuration will provide optimal weight distribution. The vehicle's low and wide stance offers the driver a unique view of the fenders from the inside of the car.

The Fisker Karma will offer partly self-contained climate control, as consumers will have the option to purchase a full length solar roof that will help charge the car and provide cooling for the interior cabin while the car is parked. Additionally, Fisker Automotive will offer consumers an option to purchase a set of solar panels for their roofs or garages where they can generate electricity during the day to charge the car overnight...again cost and emission free.

All of the hybrid talk and more people gaining an interest in hybrids Fisker introduces their sports car hybrid, the Fisker Karma. This is a mix of gas and electric with a fuel economy rating of (drum roll please) 100 miles per gallon (mpg). You can have one soon one day for a small $80,000.

Wonder why they named it Karma, maybe good Karma when you can achieve 100 mpg while still keeping up with the new Dodge Challenger SRT-8.

The Tesla Roadster Gets Some Competition 2010

Tesla is probably feeling a little heat right about now. The Fisker Karma is making headlines now that the company has set a delivery date of early 2010 and the pictures of the Karma alone are enough to make it a competitor for Tesla’s high-priced Roadster. The Karma is being built by Valmet Automotive, the company that also assembles the Boxster and Cayman for Porsche, and it shows in the seriously sleek curves that scream (in the most civilized way) “luxury vehicle”.

Fisker-Karma.jpgDespite whispers of vaporware and only a little more than four months since the original concept was debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Fisker has handed out a set of six images of the Fisker Karma testing in Southern California. The prototype looks shockingly similar to the show car and is wearing only the lightest of camouflage, just vinyl stickers which do little to obscure the cars handsome body work.


We can't promise this is anything other than a body and chassis mule, there could be no hybrid power train under that sleek sheetmetal, but we can't help but drool over the idea this thing might actually become reality.
